Jones and Blackhawk Players shine at UFL Las Vegas Locos Tryout

CERRITOS, Calif. (May 10, 2011) -- The Las Vegas Locos of the UFL, conducted an open player try-out last week at Cerritos College in Cerritos California.  There were close to 300 players from all over the nation who worked out hard to make an impression on the Locos coaching staff as well as head coach Jim Fassel who was in attendance.  There were several players from local minor league teams here in Southern California and four from the LCFL Champion, Inglewood Blackhawks.  (WR) Solomon Jones, (LB) Brandon Souder, (LB/TE) Dwight Hamilton, and newly signed Defensive Back, Anthony Anaberee all competed and performed at a high level to catch the eyes of the Locos coaching staff.  The workout went well for all three but the one person who stood out was the 2010 LCFL MVP, Solomon Jones.  After slipping on his first attempt in the 40 yard dash, Jones was still able to regain his footing and run a 4.80 which was good for most of the skilled players at that point in the workout.  On his second try, Jones made all heads turn when he clocked a 4.44 which amazed the clock operators.  Jones concluded the speed test with the second fastest time of the day of anyone.  He was only second to a wide receiver from the University of Hawaii.

The second and most important of the workout was the WR/DB one on one's.  This is where track speed and field speed seperate a good athlete from a great athlete.  Jones lit up the one on one's where he dominated every defensive back that lined up in front of him.  Mind you, most of these players were fresh out of Division I and II programs so that should tell you the amount of talent Jones posses.  Jones made it look easy as he caught every accurate pass that was thrown to him even making an acrobatic catch against one of the better DB's out there from the University of Utah.  After watching Jones perform, Coach Fassel pulled Coach Tony Reid aside and asked does Jones return punts and kicks as well.  With that question being asked was a huge plus for Jones.

Hopefully with his solid workout and performance, Jones will receive that call that has eluded him for years, the call to training camp with a professional salaried team.  We all know once you get your foot in the crack of the door, you kick it down, and that's the plan for Jones and the Blackhawk staff.  We really feel with the right opportunity, Solomon can go and excel on the next level.  Ironically when Coach Reid and the Blackhawk players were exiting the workout, Richard Wade, a scout with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League pulled Reid to the side and congratulated him on another championship season.  Wade was introduced to Souder and Jones and told Jones he was the best wide receiver out there and that he had him written down on his list.  With that comment, let's hope that this workout was a two for one deal in which Jones can ultimately choose his next destination.  It's out of our hands now, but we'll wait and see.
