Blackhawks Fly by Vegas Kings 25-6 to win LCFL Championship

WHITTIER, Calif. (November 21, 2010) -- The Inglewood Blackhawks came into the 2010 LCFL Championship with one thing on their mind.  That was to be humble and let the chips fall where they may.  But to their surprise during the pre-game warm ups, the Vegas Kings players sat on their sideline and made great attempts to heckle the Blackhawk players while they stretched.  They mocked the Blackhawks during all of their cadences while they warmed up.  This seemed to light a fire up under the Blackhawk players, most notably, LCFL Defensive MVP, Roy Otis.  Otis gathered his Blackhawk teammates up and said, "Whenever another man is watching you prepare and wants to make a joke out of it, usually they want to be like you or their scared".  I think it's both.  The Blackhawks broke their huddle and prepared for battle.

The game started off slow for both teams as they exchanged early game jabs.  The Blackhawks seemed to have the early momentum as the offense put (K) Mark Drake in position for a 49 yard field goal.  The first attempt at scoring failed as Drakes kick came up short.  The Blackhawk defense held strong again putting the ball back in the offenses hands.  This time the Blackhawks looked more balanced as (RB) Ronald Jean broke for a 62 yard run, down to the Kings 1 yard line.  The Kings defense stayed strong pushing the leagues #1 offense to three and out.  Drake entered the game and this time nailed a 21 yard field goal to put the Bird Gang up 3-0.  The Kings offense looked good behind the arm of (QB) Jonathan Emelo and (WR) David Sosa as they moved the ball into Blackhawk territory.  (K) Brad Faunce came in to attempt to tie the game but his 42 yard attempt sailed left leaving the score 3-0 Blackhawks after one.

The Blackhawks came out in the second quarter and put on a clinic for the fans in attendance.  (QB) Devin Hollins (10 of 20 for 204 yards and 2 TD's) hit (WR) Solomon Jones for a 56 yard TD.  Drake missed the extra point, making the score 9-0.  Otis (7 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, and 1 TFL) and his defensive counterparts begin to lock down the Vegas offense and again made the Kings punt.  This time (DB) Eddie Hunter returned the punt 89 yards to the house for another Blackhawk touchdown making the score 16-0.  On the next Kings possession, Hunter again made another great play.  This time he intercepted an Emelo pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown.  But a penalty nullified the score.  But that didn't keep the Blackhawk defense from wanting more.  On second down, Emelo was picked off again, this time by (LB) Chris Bell (11 tackles, 1 INT, 1 FF, 1 FR) as he returned it 22 yards.  For another series. the Blackhawks and Kings played back and forth football until (LB) Roy Otis intercepted another Emelo pass and returned it 33 yards down the Kings sideline.  On the ensuing Blackhawk possession, (QB) Hollins again found (WR) Solomon Jones for a 61 yard reception down to the Kings 4 yard line.  Penalties backed the Blackhawks up to where they were faced with a 3rd and goal from the 7 yard line but Hollins and Jones found a way to connect as Jones scored his second touchdown of the game putting the Blackhawks up 22-0 going into the half.

The third quarter saw a see saw battle amongst two great defenses where they both look to bend but never broke.  The Kings finally got the ball down into Blackhawk territory and scored on a 3 yard run making the score 22-6 after a failed two point conversion.  On the ensuing kickoff, Faunce pouched the ball in the air where two Blackhawks went for it and ultimately fumbled the ball giving the Kings the recovery and a bit of momentum.  But that momentum was short lived as Blackhawks (DB) Curtis Perkins (7 tackles, 2 PD, 1 INT) intercepted another Emelo pass and returned it 24 yards.  The third quarter finished without any scoring and saw the Blackhawks getting closer to victory going into the 4th leading 22-6.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Hollins hit Jones on a 44 yard reception which took the ball deep into Vegas territory.  The Blackhawks then made one of the very few mistakes they made all game when (RB) Brian Flowers fumbled the exchange from Hollins giving the ball back to the Kings.  Again, the pesky defense led by (DB) Kinte Haynes (6 tackles, 1 FF, and 4 TFL), (DE) Brandon Souder (7 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL), and (LB) Dwight Hamilton (7 tackles, 1 sack, 1 PD, 1 TFL) held the Kings offense to little to no yards.  On the next Blackhawk offensive possession, Jones again made another great catch.  This time on a reverse pass from (WR) Reggie Haynes who found Jones down the field for a 41 yard reception deep into King territory.  The scoring culminated with a 27 yard Drake field goal.  Jones finished the game with 5 receptions for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns which earned him the 2010 LCFL Championship Game MVP.

The Blackhawks defeat the Vegas Kings 25-6 to win their 3rd Championship in their 10 year history.  Coach Tony Reid led his team to a franchise best 17-1 record and the #3 ranked team in the nation.  "This year was special from the beginning when we started back in February" stated Reid.  I knew we had the makings to be a championship team when I saw the dedication these guys had as well as the humble approach they brought to every game.  All year long we always said, we will not look past the opponent in front of us and our goal was to be 1-0 after every game.  Well it seemed like it worked because at the end of the day, night, and now season, the Blackhawks are #1 and as they say, on the "Same Page".
